The concept of the value of a monument is very complex. In fact, in every monument, regardless of type, meaning, age etc., there may be several of these values. Usually, historical criteria are taken into account when assessing value, aesthetic, decorative, structural, age, uniqueness, as well as emotional interaction. From the historical and scientific point of view, documentary values are of particular importance for the heritage and development of culture. They are a testimony to human creativity and inform about the culture of the past. The basic documentary values of the monument lie primarily in the original features of the work. This can be seen in the author's creative image in the form of a form, composition, techniques. The originality of the work is a unique feature, unique, because it cannot be recreated. Any attempts to recreate the damaged or non-existent fragments of the monument, even the most technically correct as well as artistic and emotional, they will have no historical value, for they will not be the works of art of the old masters. The documentary value of a monument is therefore determined by the authenticity expressed by the substance, that is, the material structure, characterizing the form and mutual coupling of the building as a whole (parts). This structure is the carrier of all the elements of the monument: destroying it is tantamount to destroying it, what is associated with it.
With regard to monuments of construction and architecture, specifying the historic value usually encounters many complications, not only for typological reasons. In most cases, the building substance of objects undergoes various changes over the centuries, to which human activity contributes not little. In the past, many objects were rebuilt and adapted for originally unintended purposes for various reasons. Buildings preserved, even in a fairly good historic form, constitute a very complex and heterogeneous organism. In practical activities, when determining the value of a monument, one should take into account the type and scale of the object, its function, spatial and stylish formation, which determine the essential geometric form and decor. The state of preservation of the structure is of significant importance, architectural details, invoices, interior furnishings, technical infrastructure, etc.. Having this information, and others, which make up a historical document, scientific value and evidence of the past, is the basis for determining the value of a monument.
In administrative and conservation practice when assessing the documentary value of a monument, whose methodological basis for all monuments should be the same, additional criteria and requirements will be introduced, usually resulting from the scope of investment activities in the implementation of the care and protection program on a national scale. Based on the data obtained from research, prepared conservation guidelines and financial resources, long-term programs of conservation works are established, taking into account the sequence and nature of technical interventions.
