Heat of cement hydration

Heat of cement hydration

The setting of cements is an exothermic process, i.e., that heat is released during setting. The amount of heat released depends very much on the type of cement, but as a rule it is so big, that this phenomenon must be taken into account in many practical cases when making concrete.

The heat released increases the temperature of the maturing sponge, mortar and concrete. The temperature increase depends on the method of insulation against the loss of this heat and with hermetic insulation it can reach 100 ° C for slurries, and for concrete up to 60 ° C.

The evolution of heat continues until the hydration of the cement is complete. However, only the heat generated in the initial period is of practical importance in concrete technology (from several to several dozen hours), when 10 there is a large increase in the amount of heat, which automatically accelerates the setting and setting process in the initial period (do 3 days).

Significant influence on the amount of heat released, especially in the early stages of puberty, it has the temperature of the grout and the surroundings.
